Seniors: Laugh a Little (or a Lot!) & Reap the Health Benefits

Laughing feels great. We crave it, and we know that when we are laughing, we are doing good things for our body. It’s been theorized that laughter can cure disease. This was disproven in the 1990’s, but the fact still remains that laughter does have a number of health benefits associated with it. Seniors should take special note because as we age our bodies naturally have a lower immune system and the possibility for a host of other diseases.

Benefits of Laughter

  • Boosting immunity. It’s been proven that people who laugh (right after laughing) have lower levels of stress hormones in their blood, and a boost to their immune system.
  • Increased pain tolerance. Scattered research has proven that there is a correlation between laughter and an increase in pain tolerance.
  • Reduced stress levels. Laughter causes the secretion of dopamine in the body (along with other similar chemicals) which has a powerful affect on decreasing anxiety, depression, and stress.
  • Strengthens muscles. When you laugh you work the muscles of the abdomen and diaphragm. This can greatly benefit people who suffer from bronchitis and asthma.
  • Decreased cholesterol and blood pressure. When you laugh you breathe in more oxygen, which, in turn, helps the body’s circulation and oxygenation to the brain and the rest of the body.
What is Laughter Yoga?

For seniors who have mobility issues, or who are confined to wheelchairs, Laughter Yoga is serious business. This type of yoga is meant to replace standard yoga and is a type of voluntary laughter that results in the same benefits as regular laughter. Laughter Yoga has been known to enhance mood, as well as provide all of the other benefits listed above.

How Grief Can Affect Us

Purely by the numbers, as people age they are more likely to experience grief. Whether it’s the loss of a parent, child, partner, or good friend, grief is a process that needs to be addressed and worked through before life can regain some semblance of normalcy. People go through grief differently, and every loss takes a different toll on the individual. However, there are some emotions that can be predicted beforehand and they are:

  • Shock. Shutting down is sometimes the best way a body can cope with traumatic news or events. Not feeling anything is a defense mechanism that gears us up to be able to cope with the grief.

  • Intense emotional pain. Once the shock wears off, the pain sets in. The pain is too much for the body to bear emotionally and periods of uncontrollable crying are common.

  • Depression. The traumatic loss shakes us to the core. God’s plan is often questioned as loneliness sets in.

  • Illnesses with no apparent cause. Sometimes grief manifests in the body through sickness, aches and pains that have no real cause.

  • Panic sets in. The reality of the painful loss is obvious and clear, and because of this we panic because it’s unclear to us whether we’ll ever be happy again.

  • Anger sets in. Feeling angry about the disastrous event is common, also. It’s okay to be angry at the person that died, feeling as though they left you behind. If this feeling persists, it’s best to see a therapist to help work through it.

  • Inability to engage in life again. We might feel as though we are betraying our deceased loved one by partaking in activities we enjoy.

  • Hope. Eventually, the sun shines through the clouds and there is the tiniest feeling that you can, in fact, experience joy and happiness again.

Seniors: Babysitting is Good for Your Health

Raising children is a difficult task. Your life is changed by having children, and you adjust to become a great mother or father so that your children will grow up happy and with a sense of purpose. And then time passes and grandchildren enter the world. It’s not known who said it, but the quote, “If I’d known grandchildren were so much fun, I would have had them first!” is a common sentiment among grandparents. And now, studies have proven that when you babysit your grandchildren, you might actually be improving your health, and boosting your brain power.

Grandchildren Keep You Young

When you engage with your grandchild in activities that they enjoy – coloring, playing on the playground, singing songs, making music out of non-musical items, you are stimulating your brain. Studies show that by stimulating your brain, you improve cognitive functioning and stave off dementia. Music, itself, has been proven to keep dementia at bay as well as to help those who suffer from it return to lucidity.

Maintain Moderation

Just like everything, moderation is the key to success. You don’t have pizza every single night, and you wouldn’t sleep twelve hours a night, either. Grandparents who babysit five times a week or more actually exhibit a negative response to it. This is likely due to exhaustion and loss of identity, less time for themselves, etc. So, while babysitting your grandchild can have great cognitive and well-being benefits, don’t overdo it. You’ll likely know if you are by how you feel at the end of the day.

Other Ways to Stave off Dementia

Are you curious about other ways you can keep both your mind and body active in your senior years?

• Take a hike with a buddy. Walking through nature is one of the most relaxing, peaceful, and soul enriching activities you can engage in.

• Stay busy. Don’t be a couch potato, get up and walk around, do some yoga, walk the block with a friend, your brain will love you for it.

• Avoid alcohol and say yes to water! Never pass up vegetables, fruits, or nuts.

See a Doctor Easily with These Tips

Nobody wants accidents to happen, but let’s face it, they do. And when the time comes, you want to see a doctor ASAP, instead of waiting for hours in a crowded emergency room, or possibly days to see your general practitioner. Health care options are continually expanding (to the benefit of the public) and now there are ways to easily see a doctor without waiting what seems like a lifetime.

  • Immediate and Urgent Care Centers are springing up everywhere. These locations are perfect for injuries and illnesses that aren’t life threatening. There is likely an urgent care location in your area and you can see them for things like sprains, falls, back problems, cuts (and bleeding), the flu, fever, sinus infections, etc.

  • PAs, or Physician’s Assistants, are a practical and reasonable alternative for when you aren’t able to get in to see your own doctor. PAs can take down medical histories, they can order tests and perform them, and they can create treatment plans and even give advice to patients about the medications they’re prescribing. Plus, if it’s something very serious, they have direct access to a physician.

  • “Big Box” Clinics, also known as Retain Clinics, are located within grocery stores, pharmacies and some big department stores. With no appointment necessary to see a nurse practitioner or even a doctor, this alternative can help you with bronchitis, conjunctivitis, etc., but not more serious injuries like fractures and sprains.

  • Group Visits involve several people suffering from one condition such as asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. The advantage here is obvious – communicate ideas with one another, learn, grow, benefit from others successes and failures in treatments. Plus, there is more time allotted to group visits than single visits (over 5x as much time). There are usually psychotherapists, social workers, nurse practitioners, nurses, etc. staffing these visits, as well as access to nutritionists and behaviorists.

Always Best Care has been in the care giving industry since 1996. During that time, they have provided their compassionate care to over 25,000 seniors in Canada and the United States. If you are interested in learning about senior care options in Abbeville and Greenwood, or about assisted living communities in the area, call them at 864-229-1211 or email them at bkapperman@abc-seniors.com.
